Are you self conscious about your breasts? Are you afraid to remove your T-shirt at the beach or gym? Male breast reduction or excision of gynecomastia is the 4th most common plastic surgery procedure for men. You don’t have to live with large breasts or puffy nipples. Dr. Wendel performs male breast reduction by direct excision, liposuction or sometimes a combination of both.

MALE BREAST REDUCTION FOR GYNECOMASTIA

For many men, the appearance of abnormal breast tissue can be awkward and embarrassing. It often times make you feel self conscious and can cause improper posture because you are trying to conceal the fatty tissue beneath your shirt. What may be a surprise to learn is that one out of three men suffers from some degree of abnormal breast tissue due to hormones, genetics or maybe even from a fatty tumor.

Often, the best and most predictable solution for gynecomastia is Male Breast Reduction, which reduces and reshapes the chest area through surgery. Sometimes liposuction alone is enough, but sometimes a more extensive male breast reduction is required to remove excess skin and tissue. The male nipple can also be reshaped, repositioned and made smaller if necessary.

MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY

Before the Male Breast Reduction, Dr. Wendel will perform a comprehensive workup on your chest to see if the problem is presents itself in one or both breasts. Once that is determined, Nashville Plastic Surgeon Dr. Wendel will evaluate how much fatty tissue and skin needs to be removed. After the evaluation is complete, Dr. Wendel will surgically remove the excess skin and tissue, tightening and lifting the area. This end result is a more masculine looking physique. Following the surgery, Dr. Wendel will go over Male Breast Reduction recovery instructions, in order to minimize any discomfort.

FTM CHEST MASCULINIZATION

Dr. Wendel also performs chest masculinization surgery to sculpt a male chest. To accomplish this, he surgically removes breast tissue from underneath a female’s skin while usually retaining the nipples and areola. The amount of skin removed depends on the size of the breasts. Nipples and areola may or may not be elevated as well.

What is included in the cost of the procedure?
The cost of your gynecomastia procedure includes all pre-op and post-op appointments, anesthesia, the surgery and surgical materials, facility fees, as well as any post-op compression garments. Prescription pain medication is not covered in the cost of surgery and is not dispensed by Dr. J.J. Wendel Plastic Surgery.
How much does a gynecomastia procedure cost?
The cost of a gynecomastia depends on the type, location, and measurements of the scar. Even with these variables, gynecomastia surgery typically starts at $7,100.
After the initial consultation, how many more visits will I make to your office before the surgery?
In addition to the initial consultation, you’ll have one more preoperative appointment. At this appointment, you will discuss any questions that may have arisen, talk about specific details of the surgery, review pre and post op instructions, and prescriptions will be prescribed electronically. You will also have pre-operative photos taken for your medical chart.
What happens at my initial consultation?
During your consultation with Dr. Wendel, he will discuss your goals, the nature of the gynecomastia procedure, and what you can expect in regarding recovery, complications, and scars. After talking with Dr. Wendel, you will meet with our surgery scheduler to discuss cost, payment, and scheduling surgery.
What should I expect after the surgery?
Since you will be recovering from anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home from the surgery center and stay with you for the first 24 hours after the surgery. You can expect some bruising and swelling on the chest. You will wear a compression vest for 6 weeks and keep your activity light. Depending on your case, you may need drain tubes. Most patients take one week off from work, although you are free to go back to work after the drain tubes are removed.
Am I a good candidate?
Good candidates for male breast reduction surgery are healthy with no significant medical problems and your gynecomastia should not be related to a hormonal issue (gynecomastia cannot fix hormonal issues that result in excess breast tissue).
What kind of scars will I have?
Gynecomastia may result in incisions around the nipple areola and/or along the crease underneath the breast.
What causes gynecomastia?
Though the exact cause is not always known, gynecomastia has been linked to certain medications, hormonal imbalance or steroid use.
What is gynecomastia or male breast reduction?
Gynecomastia refers to the removal of excess breast tissue in men. Men that experience excess breast tissue usually do so when they are teenagers or after the age of 50 when testosterone production decreases. Certain drugs, both prescription and recreational, can also result in excess breast tissue.
