MOMMY MAKEOVER EXPLAINED

Many mothers aren’t satisfied with the changes in their body after childbirth. These women are concerned with the extra weight around their tummy and thighs. Their breast size, shape and perkiness may have changes. There may even be changes to the birth canal, such as tenderness or tearing of the vagina. These women come to Dr. Wendel with concerns about getting their bodies back into pre-pregnancy state.

A Mommy Makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures performed for a woman who wants her pre-baby body back. The procedures can involve:  breast lift or breast augmentation, tummy tuck, possibly liposuction and any of the other procedures listed below, including labiaplasty.

01

BREAST AUGMENTATION

Giving birth can drastically change your breasts in many ways. Typically, they become larger to store the breast milk, and then turn smaller and less firm when there is no longer breast milk. Many women come to Dr. Wendel with mommy makeover questions about how they can get their breasts back to the pre-pregnancy state. One way is to enhance the breasts with breast implants (breast augmentation).

BREAST LIFT

Following childbirth, you may notice your breasts are sagging and are no longer as perky as they once were. This is very common after breastfeeding or pregnancy. Gravity takes its toll on a mother, but a breast lift might be a solution for you. A breast lift can help you restore your breasts to their original position.

BREAST LIFT WITH IMPLANTS

Following childbirth, some women notice their breasts are smaller and deflated and at times have nipples that point downward. What was once a full “C” cup is now a “B” or maybe even an “A”. If you are looking for more volume, in addition to a lift, a breast lift with implants is a good option to consider.  This procedure has an added benefit since most women would rather have one operation instead of two, undergoing a breast lift and breast augmentation at the same time.

BREAST REDUCTION

Sometimes we see drastic changes in our breasts after childbirth. In some cases, a woman’s breasts become bigger. It’s natural to have larger breasts while you are pregnant, since your body is creating milk and storing it in your breasts. But sometimes women notice their breasts remain larger even after they have stopped breast feeding. If you feel your breasts are too large and not proportioned to your body size you might want to consider breast reduction surgery.

LIPOSUCTION

Following childbirth, many women begin to diet and exercise to get their bodies back into pre-pregnancy shape. You may find however, your body has changed significantly. It is no longer responding to diet and exercise as it once did. You now have fat deposits around your body and can’t seem to get rid of them. If this is you, consider the benefits of liposuction. Liposuction candidates should be healthy and close to their ideal weight.

MINI TUMMY TUCK

Following childbirth, many mothers have extra fat, saggy skin and muscle weakness in the tummy area.  If you have minimal fat and minimal sagging in the skin, you are a candidate for a mini tummy tuck.  A mini tummy tuck removes a small amount of skin and is best for someone who has a small pouch in their tummy area. Another advantage of the mini tummy tuck is the use of one incision, versus two. A full tummy tuck leaves you with a scar below your bikini line and one around the belly button. A mini tummy tuck does not involve a scar around the belly button.

FULL TUMMY TUCK

Following childbirth, you may realize the pregnancy significantly stretched your abdomen. Your tummy area might feel heavy, and has sagging skin and excess fat. If the pouch in your belly area does not respond to exercise or diet and is larger than you would like, you might be a good candidate for a full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

LABIAPLASTY

If you had a vaginal birth, you may have noticed your labia minora or labia majora look and feel different. The area might be stretched, prone to infections and might even be causing discomfort with clothing.  In addition, you may notice the symmetry in the vaginal area is off, following the childbirth. While this is a very private issue for many women, the reality is this surgery is becoming increasingly popular for women who seek improvement in the area.

FAQ's
What are your payment terms?
We require a deposit of $1,000-$1,500 up front to secure your surgery date and time. The remaining balance must be paid in full no later than two weeks before your scheduled surgery date. We accept all major credit and debit cards, cash, cashier’s check. We do accept Care Credit if you are interested in financing for the surgeon’s fee only. We do not accept personal checks or HSA.
What is included in the cost of the procedure?
The cost of your mommy makeover includes all pre-op and post-op appointments, anesthesia, the surgery and surgical materials, facility fees, as well as any post-op compression garments. Prescription pain medication is not covered in the cost of surgery and is not dispensed by Dr. J.J. Wendel Plastic Surgery.
How much does a mommy makeover cost?
The cost of a mommy makeover depends on the type of breast procedure(s) that will help you achieve your goals. Even with these variables, mommy makeovers typically cost between $19,500 - $27,200.
After the initial consultation, how many more visits will I make to your office before the surgery?
In addition to the initial consultation, you’ll have one more preoperative appointment. At this appointment, you will discuss any questions that may have arisen, talk about specific details of the surgery, review pre and post op instructions, and prescriptions will be prescribed electronically. You will also have pre-operative photos taken for your medical chart.
What happens at my initial consultation?
During your consultation with Dr. Wendel, he will discuss your goals, the nature of the mommy makeover procedures, and what you can expect regarding recovery, complications, and scars. He will discuss the implants (if applicable) and you will be able to “try on” different implant sizes using special garments. After talking with Dr. Wendel, you will meet with our surgery scheduler to discuss cost, payment, and scheduling surgery.
What kind of scars will I have?
The incisions for mommy makeover will vary depending on what procedures are performed. During a full tummy tuck procedure, an incision will often be made low on the abdomen (near the pubic region), extending from hip to hip. The incisions for mastopexy will vary based on the type of lift that is needed. A crescent lift leaves minimal scarring that is hidden by pigment changes between the skin of the breast and the areola. Other breast lift techniques may leave thin horizontal or vertical scars on the breasts. These scars will fade over time, usually about one year, and should be much less noticeable. The incisions for breast augmentations are placed in inconspicuous areas to prevent visible scarring. Most patients have a 1.5-inch scar in the crease on the underside of their breast.
I have a hernia. Can an abdominoplasty be done at the same time as the hernia repair?
Hernias at the belly button are very common in women who have had multiple pregnancies or twin/triplet pregnancies. Yes, hernias can also be addressed at the same time.
Will a caesarean section or hysterectomy affect Mommy Makeover results?
No, the incision for the abdominoplasty is at the same level on the lower abdomen. Some women have bothersome extra skin that hangs over their caesarean section or hysterectomy incision. Abdominoplasty can remove this scar and skin to smooth the contour.
What are the different options for a Mommy Makeover?
It is some combination of the following: breast lift, with or breast implants; breast reduction; abdominoplasty (also known as a tummy tuck); mini abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck); and/or liposuction.
When Is the Best Time for a Mommy Makeover?
It is best to have a mommy makeover procedure after you are done having children. We also recommend that you wait until after you are finished breastfeeding your youngest child to have a mommy makeover. Waiting 3-6 months after you’ve finished breastfeeding allows the breasts to stabilize in shape and size, which helps us conduct an accurate surgical assessment. Finally, it is also recommended that new mothers maintain their post-pregnancy weight for approximately six months before seeking a mommy makeover. Like the breasts, this helps ensure the body is stabilized and recovered from the stresses of pregnancy and childbirth before you undergo another major surgery.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
Mommy Makeover" is a term used to describe rejuvenation of the breasts and abdomen. The goal is to address some of the common physical changes that can occur following pregnancy. On the breast, these most commonly include sagging and deflation. On the abdomen, it is often excess skin with stretch marks and bulging.
