Uneven breasts are very common. Dr. Wendel performs breast asymmetry correction using combinations of breast augmentation, breast lift with or without implants, and/or breast reduction to restore size, shape and symmetry to uneven breasts. Tuberous breasts, sometimes called tubular breasts, is a congenital breast condition that may be mild or severe. It occurs in both men and women and can involve one or both breasts. The condition is not uncommon, affecting about 5% of the population. Plastic surgical correction may involve breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction or a combination of these surgical procedures.

A SOLUTION FOR BREAST ASYMMETRY

Do you have uneven breasts? Are you embarrassed that your breasts are different sizes or have different shapes? Is it difficult for you to find bras or bathing suits that fit? If so, you might be a good candidate for breast asymmetry correction.

Uneven breasts typically develop during puberty and may get worse as a women’s breasts change with age, pregnancy or changes in weight. To correct uneven breasts, plastic surgery is often necessary.

Breast symmetry surgery may involve breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction or a combination of these approaches. The smaller breast can be made bigger with a breast implant to match the larger one, or the larger breast can be lifted and reduced to match the smaller one. Sometimes, plastic surgery on both breasts is needed.

Dr. Wendel will carefully go over all your options to see what might be right for you. It is common for women to have their breasts redone later in life, especially after having children. Women’s breasts change over time. Long term, the reoccurrence of uneven breasts is often the rule and not the exception.

TUBEROUS BREAST SURGERY

Dr. Wendel will perform the surgery in Nashville, TN using anesthesia in a fully accredited surgical facility. Surgery is expected to take 1-3 hours and is usually an outpatient procedure. Drainage tubes are not typically necessary.

Tuberous Breast Surgery may involve minimal or several incisions on one or both breasts. The herniated nipple areola complex can be made smaller and repositioned on the breast if needed. Breast implants can be used to add volume and shape to smaller breasts if desired.

Following the surgery, Dr. Wendel will go over your recovery instructions with you, in order to minimize any discomfort.

CORRECTION OF TUBEROUS BREASTS

Tuberous breasts, sometimes called tubular breasts, is a congenital breast condition that can occur in men and women and can involve one or both breasts. The condition usually becomes apparent during pubertal breast development and is marked by a combination of the following characteristics on either the right or the left breast:

  • Small or underdeveloped breast
  • Large, puffy nipple
  • Wide gap between the breasts
  • Constricted breast base with a high inframammary fold or shortened distance from breast crease to nipple
  • Breast sagging
  • Developmental breast asymmetry

Tuberous Breasts is not uncommon, affecting about 5% of the population. It may be mild or severe. The condition can interfere with breastfeeding but is not known to be associated with infertility. Other common names associated with Tuberous Breasts are tubular breasts, constricted breasts, herniated areolas, breast hypoplasia, and congenital breast asymmetry. Plastic surgery is often necessary to correct Tuberous Breasts.

Plastic surgical correction may involve breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction or a combination of these surgical procedures. At the time of your consultation, Dr. Wendel will assess your needs, wants and  go over your options to see what might best suit your goals. It is common for women with tubular breasts to have their breasts redone later in life, especially after having children. Women’s breasts change over time. Unevenness often comes back years later.

POLAND SYNDROME

A relatively rare occurrence at birth, Poland Syndrome typically presents on only one side of the body. Patients with Poland Syndrome may be missing parts of their chest muscle and/or breast, making it appear underdeveloped or even missing. The breast may also have nipple or areola issues, none of which specifically cause health problems. Dr. Wendel has experience in restoring a natural-looking breast for patients with Poland Syndrome. He can surgically reconstruct the chest wall and significantly improve breast symmetry by using several combination techniques, which may include Breast Implants, Breast Reconstruction with Latissimus Dorsi and/or Breast Fat Transfer. Nipple and areola correction is also possible with Nipple Surgery.

We accept all major credit and debit cards, cash, cashier’s check. We do accept Care Credit if you are interested in financing for the surgeon’s fee only. We do not accept personal checks or HSA.
What is included in the cost of the procedure?
The cost of your breast asymmetry procedure(s) includes all pre-op and post-op appointments, anesthesia, the surgery and surgical materials, facility fees, as well as any post-op compression garments. Prescription pain medication is not covered in the cost of surgery and is not dispensed by Dr. J.J. Wendel Plastic Surgery.
How much does breast asymmetry correction cost?
The cost will directly depend on what procedure(s) are needed for your specific breast asymmetry correction.
After the initial consultation, how many more visits will I make to your office before the surgery?
In addition to the initial consultation, you’ll make one more preoperative appointment. At this appointment, you will discuss any questions that may have arisen, talk about specific details of the surgery, review pre and post op instructions. Prescriptions will be prescribed electronically. You will also have pre-operative photos taken for your medical chart.
What happens at my initial consultation?
During your consultation with Dr. Wendel, he will discuss your goals, surgical procedure options, realistic expectations, and what you can expect regarding recovery, complications, and scars. If you are considering an augmentation, you will be able to “try on” different implant sizes using special garments. After talking with Dr. Wendel, you will meet with our surgery scheduler to discuss cost, payment options, and scheduling surgery.
What kind of scars will I have?
Scars will vary depending on that procedure is needed to correct your asymmetry.
What are my Other Options?
A breast augmentation or lift isn't always the answer to asymmetry issues. If you have larger breasts, you may want to consider breast reduction surgery. Also known as a reduction mammaplasty, this type of procedure decreases the overall size of one or both breasts. With breast reduction, Dr. Wendel removes excess breast tissue to decrease your cup size. Like breast augmentation, when done to create a more symmetrical appearance, a breast reduction may only include surgery for one breast. This type of procedure will make the larger breast a similar size as the smaller one. If both breasts cause you physical or emotional discomfort, talk to Dr. Wendel about a reduction on both sides.
How Can a Breast Lift Help You to Correct Asymmetry?
While an augmentation procedure can help to create a symmetrical size or shape, it isn't your only option. Different positions, shapes, or nipple asymmetry may require a lift (or augmentation and lift). With a lift, Dr. Wendel can reshape or reposition the breasts. This includes nipple repositioning. A lift can correct many types of asymmetries and can also adjust cup size differences.
How Can Augmentation Help You to Correct Asymmetry?
Asymmetric breasts may not require full augmentation surgery. This procedure typically includes augmenting both breasts at the same time. If one breast is larger or fuller than the other, you may only need to change one. But this doesn't mean you can't select a full (both breasts) augmentation. Some women who choose augmentation to correct asymmetry do select to change both breasts. This type of procedure allows you to eliminate the imbalance and add fullness to your overall bust-line. If you select this type of procedure, the implant sizes for each breast may differ to create an even appearance
Is breast asymmetry correction surgery right for me?
If you are unhappy with the asymmetrical appearance of your breasts and it causes you difficulty finding clothes that fit or make you feel less confident, less attractive, or less desirable, you could be a good candidate for breast asymmetry surgery. It’s important for you to understand the many options available to you so that you can make an educated decision about the best treatment plan for your unique situation
Why Are Some Breasts Asymmetrical?
There isn't one universal cause for asymmetry. Slight asymmetry is a natural occurrence for many women. This means there is no specific underlying cause. But other women may have unevenness due to a specific reason or underlying issue. These include developmental, pregnancy-related changes, benign cysts, fibrosis (higher amounts of fibrous breast tissue), hormonal changes (including the use of hormonal contraceptives), trauma, past surgery, and possibly breast cancer.
